sci-fi weekend

Why do I go to science fiction conventions? The people are interesting and fun. I learn something new while attending the science panels; and seriously, scientists are the coolest nerds ever.

I attended Farpoint a couple of weeks ago, and I got to see and do stuff like this...

These boys won a prize in the masquerade for their depiction of
Minecraft Style ala Gangnam Style.

You never know when you're going to meet the Geico Gorn.
Their masquerade skit was pretty funny.
Oh, and the woman in the Gorn costume is blind, which ups the coolness levels.

Darth Vader and his wife are trying something sweet to lure unsuspecting persons to the Dark Side. Plus, they have the best aprons ever.

If you need help finding a woman, you might try this bookI don't think it will really be all that helpful as we don't have any alien women on this planet... yet.

aka
These two are the funniest couple I've ever seen on stage. I laughed sooo hard.

Klingons learning how to dance Thriller.

Felicia Day is adorable, witty and smart, and definitely a much bigger nerd than me.
I only wish I was as cool... but I'm not a gamer, nor will I ever be.

I found the TARDIS!!

I loved this kid. He was so cute and funny!

The Klingon Empire and The Empire have an exchange program.
Who knew?

This girl's Iron Man costume was absolutely the best.
Very well done.

I love Captain America...
Now in my dreams he looked a bit younger.

And I get to meet really cool people like this guy...
Marc Okrand, creator of the Klingon language.
And sadly no I do not speak Klingon.

A very satisfying weekend of nerdiness and geekiness. You can read my friend T's recap and see more photos here.

the one with the machete...

i have great friends.
one in particular who came to my rescue after i was robbed.
he loaned me his spare machete!

after all, i needed a way to defend myself if the intruder(s) came back.

a machete is the perfect accessory.
just what every girl needs when she's living on her own in the big city
and worried about zombie attacks.

a machete is handy for those times
when a girl needs to sneak through the bushes
and carry out ninja attacks.
a machete is so inconspicuous.

but seriously, ld is a great friend
and the machete provided great laughs
and at 3am when i heard voices outside in the alley
i felt better knowing i had the machete under the bed.

thank you ld.
i'm so gonna miss you.

my twin?

My sister, Becky, called me this evening just to tell me that she found my twin.

Becky told me Maggie's favorite thing to do is read!
She drives the school bus and is in charge of everyone.

What do guys think? Is Maggie my twin?

Her little boy B has been watching this over and over again:

doc martin

Doc Martin is another gem of a British television series, which has left gasping me for air after laughing so hard I about lose control of my bladder.

Doctor Martin Ellingham is a renowned London surgeon, who moves to Port Wenn in the beautiful Cornish seaside after developing a healthy fear of blood. He has all the warmth and charm of a bowel resection, and his bedside manner is equally intolerable. His social awkwardness is almost his undoing as he arrives in the small, gossipy village of Port Wenn, but once the locals learn of his brilliance as a doctor and the unconventional manner in which he expresses and shows his genuine concern for them, they take him into their hearts and can't imagine the village without him.

The side characters are just as quirky and fun as Doc Martin, and their interactions are comical to watch. The cast is terrific, and I love being able to watch Stephanie Cole who is a brilliant actress. Another bonus is the beautiful Cornish countryside and seaside through which Doc Martin travels as he makes his rounds. Be sure to book your appointment for a visit to Doc Martin's surgery.  You won't be disappointed.

You can watch Seasons 1-4 right on Netflix and for free on hulu.com

cat ballou

This movie just makes me laugh and sing along. Cat Ballou is a priceless little gem of a comedy.  It's full of great performances: a young Jane Fonda plays schoolmarm turned outlaw Cat Ballou; Lee Marvin's Oscar winning turn as Kid Shelleen a drunken gun fighter is priceless; and Nat King Cole's final performance with Stubby Kaye as a pair of narrating minstrels is a musical delight.

If you need a good laugh and want to watch some great talent then this is the movie to watch.

reasons to car pool

This is a very serious post about the advantages of carpooling.
Heck, with all the problems that come from oil consumption,
there are actually some really good reasons to car pool:

10.  One less car on the road
9.  Company while traveling
8.  Able to use the car pool lanes during rush hour
7.  Save $$$$ on parking
6.  Save time by using car pool lanes
5.  Reduce carbon footprint
4.  Way more fun than going alone
3.  Use less gas
2.  Save $$$$ on gas

And the number one best reason ever for carpooling:

'Cause heaven knows you wouldn't want to ride alone with Hitler!

I love WWII motivational posters.  :)

eavesdropping

I admit I am an eavesdropper.

Sometimes, I just can't help it.  I'll be sitting somewhere minding my own business and over hear someone's conversation.  I don't intend to listen, but sometimes I do because it's way more interesting than what I'm doing.

For instance, while lying on the beach two weeks ago in Florida I overheard the following conversation between two women several yards away.  They were discussing education, and I believe one of them was an elementary school teacher.  One of her colleagues does a 15 minute exercise DVD each day in her classroom with her students, because as she put it, "I don't have time to do my workout, so I just incorporated into my class time.  That way I get my workout in, and my students get some physical activity as well."

How brilliant is that!  What a great teacher and what an imaginative way to get a workout in.  I don't feel guilty at all for eavesdropping on that conversation.

This WWII poster sums up the importance of a good workout,
'cause we all want to get hot, see.
