going through a phase

I think I'm going through a phase.  Bear with me, because I'm going to whine a bit today.

It might have something to do with this month-long cold I have right now.  I feel pretty miserable and am so very tired all of the time this week.  This malaise is transfering over to other elements of my life right now.

  1. I'm tired of feeling sick.
  2. I'm tired of going to work.
  3. I'm tired of my car not working properly.
  4. I'm tired of paying the bills.
  5. I'm tired of spending one weekend a month working.
  6. I'm tired of cooking for one.
  7. In short, I'm tired.
Here's my antidote to this lingering period of complaining and wingeing.

  1. I am thankful for my lovely, cozy apartment and the furnishings and decorations.
  2. I am thankful for sleep in my own, very comfy, bed.
  3. I am thankful for coming home from work and changing into comfy clothes
  4. I am thankful for cooler weather and sweaters and thick socks and boots.
  5. I am thankful for a working washer and dryer right in my own home.
  6. I am thankful for hot herbal  tea in the giant mugs my brother made for me. Twinings of London makes a chamomile-spearmint tea that is divine.
  7. I am thankful for visits with family.
  8. I am thankful for being able to pay my bills and get my car repaired.
  9. I am thankful for good friends who listen and help, and pray for  me.
  10. I am thankful for good books and time to relax.
  11. I am thankful for my jobs and the good people with whom I work.
  12. I am thankful for hymns and being able to sing them.
In spite of all my complaints, I do have much for which I'm thankful.  I really need to stop this whining.

summer blessings

Just a few summer blessings, that make me really happy.

My cute, red VW Jetta with a sun roof.
My upside down tomato plants are growing well and have baby tomatoes on them.
I have the cutest pair of bright green wedge heels.
My job rocks and I have fun there every day.
I am healthy and can go running in the mornings.
There will be more beach time this summer and camping.
During the summer, my spring allergies disappear.
  Cranberry-Pomegranate juice is really yummy.
I have lots of good books to read this summer.
DC farmer's markets are a great substitute for not being able to have my own garden.
I am the cool aunt to 11 gorgeous nieces and nephews.
I live so close to the Washington, DC LDS Temple.

Gosh, I love summer!

why i am became an american citizen

One of my favorite things is my subscription to Real Simple.  Chock full of simple, down-to-earth ways to make life easier, this magazine makes me smile whenever I read it.  This month's issue highlights six women who became U.S. citizens during the past year.  Reading their stories in the article titled Why I Became an American Citizen and learning the reasons why they chose to become naturalized citizens made me feel so very thankful for the opportunities I have here in the good ol' U.S. of A.  What a blessed live I have here!

Here are the simple reasons:

Lorraine from Jamaica:  "To life free of fear."  "I had three locks on my bedroom door and slept with the lights on.  That constant sense of danger wore me down."  "Life in the United States has been good.  In Jamaica there's a feeling that you shouldn't have certain ambitions or dreams, because you don't have any money or you're not from the right family.  Here, I'm pursuing a nursing position, and my children...can do anything they want in future.  We live in a little square box apartment, but they'll grow up knowing that every door is open to them."

Monika from India:  "To be in a place where greatness is encouraged."  "I like the candidness of the culture.  I love being around people who are so ambitious and innovative--where the individual is celebrated.  I like the positivity here, too. Sometimes I think Americans must have invented the exclamation point--it's their state of mind."

Than Than from Myanmar: "To escape oppression."  "Despite the sadness that I knew i would endure when I left my loved ones.  I wanted the freedom that America offered--for me and my kids, whom I am trying to bring here.  ...the opportunities that exist here [are] worth any sacrifice."

Avishag from Israel:  "To be with my soul mate."  "The day I took the oath,... I was so excited.  It had taken me many years to get to this point...  It felt like a circle had closed:  Now my husband and two kids... and I would all be citizens.  Looking around the room that day with so many nationalities represented, I realized each of was closing his or her own circle.  I hope all come to the same conclusion that...I did: that if you work hard in America, you will have a wonderful life."

Michele from Russia:  "To break with my past."  "Despite the sad stuff that happened in my past, I remain a big optimist.  I like to think that's the American in me."

Maria from Peru:  "To give my parents--and myself--a better life."  "Many people come to America to help their families, but you have to help yourself, too.  ...overall I love being an American.  I love the fast pace of this culture, the ability to do a million things at once, and, most of all, the sense that there are infinite possibilities out there--all you have to do is grab hold of the one you want."

feeling better is a blessing

i have been sick for about two weeks.  again.

complete with major nasal congestion, headaches, low grade fevers, hoarseness, a very large and painful cold sore, along with feelings of having been hit by a truck.  i self medicated with lots of kleenex, vitamin water, zicam, tylenol cold sinus, chicken noodle soup and toast.

this time i went to the doctor early on and got antibiotics.  i'm on day four of the antibiotics and i already feel so much better.  it's amazing and i'm so thankful.

i wasn't looking forward to another four weeks of misery, which is what happened last november, because i couldn't get into the doctor early enough.  as a result i got bronchitis and was even more miserable.  and this was all after i got my first flu shot in about three years.  ha.

the short of it is, i'm very thankful for feeling so much better.
what a blessing it is.

and i really can relate to calvin.

Things I'm thank for this week - VII

We all know it's good to be thankful or in others words to cultivate an 'attitude of gratitude'.  I recently read an article on The Benefits of Being Thankful.  The author summarizes the benefits, which result from consciously spending a little time each day being thankful.  Participants in the study reported greater levels of optimism and more positive moods and a feeling of belonging, or in other words "experiencing gratitude promoted psychological well being."  Not only did they feel better, but they also spent more time helping someone else with their problems.  Participants in another study reported less physical illness symptoms and spent more time exersizing.  So, being thankful also promotes physical well being or good health.

Another study, focused on participants with a neuromuscular disease, and they reported higher levels of positive sleep, as well as more and better quality sleep.  The study group participant's spouse or partner were also asked to track behaviors during the study and reported more positive outlooks and less negativity, meaning that the effects of gratitude were noticeable by others.

I already knew all of this.  Okay, I hadn't consciously sat down and thought about how being grateful was making me happier or healthier, I just knew on some level that it was.  This article simply confirmed what I already knew and could feel within myself as I contemplated my blessings.

I love that God's commandments are for the benefit of his children.  And so it is with the commandment to "...live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which He doth bestow upon you" (Alma 34:38).  I hope that you often spend time contemplating and listing those things for which you are thankful.  As you do, you will reap the blessings of being thankful.

It's hard to narrow the list to just a few things each day for which I'm thankul.
So, here is a long list:

leaves changing colors
raking leaves
change
mail
cleanliness
sleep and rest
my savior and friend, jesus christ
hair cuts

Things I'm thankful for this week - II

Things I'm thankful for today:

1.  I'm not in Kuwait this year.
2.  My mom is recovering well from her fall down the stairs last Thanksgiving.  It's been a long road to recovery, but I think she's almost there.
3.  The scriptures
4.  My car
5.  Military service men and women all around the world, who are putting their lives on hold and even on the line to protect freedom and democracy, and make our world a safer place to live.
